Mexican-American War

The Mexican-American War was fought between April 1846 and February 1848. The conflict stemmed from the United States’ annexation of Texas in 1845 and from a dispute over whether Texas ended at the Nueces River (Mexican claim) or the Rio Grande (U.S. claim).

An excerpt from Mrs. J. Frank Roberts’ article on the history of Cleveland County. (Most likely she was Martha Bessie Cabaniss Roberts.)

Although they were apparently many, documentation for only seven Cleveland County men who served in this war has been recorded to date. They were:

The Battle of the National Bridge (Puente Nacional) occurred on August 12, 1847, during the Mexican-American War when U.S. forces, particularly North Carolina volunteers, fought to secure a critical, heavily defended Spanish-built stone bridge on the National Road between Vera Cruz and Mexico City. It was a key strategic checkpoint for supply lines.
James Ingram Love of Cleveland County was wounded at this battle on August 12, 1847.
James Ingram Love of Cleveland County died in this battle,
also known as the Battle of Jalapa, on August 19, 1847.
