
Among the first settlers of this area was John Bishop Harry. Nicknamed “John Bull,” he was born in Maryland, married in Virginia in 1806, and visited Lincoln County while on their honeymoon trip. They decided to settle there.
When Cleveland County was created by legislative action in 1841, John became instrumental in the new county’s formation. It was about this time that he and his family moved to what was then called “Whitaker.” Whitaker was actually across the state line in South Carolina. Frederick Hambright was a German immigrant who came to Philadelphia in 1738. About 1760, he and his wife and family came to North Carolina. He served as a Lt. Colonel during the Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in the war. He is buried at the Old Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery in Grover, NC. Read more. . .
Because of the railroad, the town of Whitaker grew–so much so that it grew into the bounds of North Carolina. In 1885, it became necessary to relocate the town’s post office to the North Carolina portion of the town. Because there was already a Whitaker, NC, the name of the town was changed to Grover after Grover Cleveland. Read more. . .
